Why download only part of a video
Most of the time you do not want all of it. One song from a two-hour concert, a minute of a podcast you want to share, the goal from a full match – downloading the whole thing and cutting it later costs time, data and storage, and on a phone it often fails halfway.
The clip downloader asks YouTube for just the range you typed. The download is roughly as long and as large as the clip itself, whatever the length of the video around it.
How to write the range
Write the start, a dash, and the end. Each time can be minutes and seconds (3:28), hours, minutes and seconds (1:02:30) or plain seconds (208). Spaces around the dash are fine. In the bot you can put the range right after the link in the same message; on the website it has its own box next to the link. Leave that box empty and you get the whole video, exactly like the YouTube downloader.
Exact to the second
Video files are made of groups of frames, and a fast cut can only start at the beginning of a group – which can be several seconds before the time you asked for. To avoid that, the clip is re-encoded at its edges, so it starts and ends where you said, not at the nearest convenient frame. The middle of the clip keeps YouTube's quality.
Video or sound
Every quality YouTube has for the video is offered, with the clip's size next to it. Choose Audio for the sound alone – the usual way to take one song out of a live set or a single answer out of an interview. For a whole video as MP3, see YouTube to MP3.
