How X downloading works
A post on X has an address like x.com/<user>/status/<number>, and that number is all the downloader needs. It asks three public sources for the post one after another – FxTwitter, vxTwitter and X's own embed service, the one that draws embedded tweets on news sites – and takes the first that has the media. When one of them is down or refuses a particular post, the next one usually answers.
From the answer it takes every photo at its original size (not the compressed preview X shows in the timeline), the highest-bitrate MP4 of every video, and the MP4 behind every GIF. The order is the order in the post.
The post card
Before you download anything, the site shows the post the way the bot does: the author's name and handle, the date, likes, reposts, replies and views, the text (shortened, with Full text to read the rest), a quoted post when there is one, and a link back to X. In the bot the same card is the caption of the photo or video, so you keep the context together with the file.
Sensitive and age-restricted posts
X has two different labels that are easy to confuse. A post marked sensitive is shown behind a warning, but anyone can still open it – the downloader handles these like any other post. A post labelled age-restricted adult content is hidden from everyone who is not logged in with an age-verified account. Those cannot be fetched without an account, and the bot and the site say exactly that, rather than pretending the post was deleted or private.
Things to do with a saved video
- Find the song. Send the video to the bot and press Identify the music, or see find a song from a video.
- Keep only a part. Reply to it with a range like
0:05-0:12and the cutter returns that piece. - Other platforms. The same paste-and-download works for Reddit, TikTok and Instagram Reels.
