How Reddit downloading works
Every Reddit post has a short id in its address – the part after /comments/. The downloader reads the post through Reddit's public data, the same data that makes Reddit links preview in chat apps, and decides what kind of post it is.
A video is fetched as Reddit's two streams – picture and sound – and joined into one MP4, so it plays with its sound. A picture is taken at its full size, not the preview. A GIF is taken as the MP4 Reddit already makes of it, which is smaller and plays everywhere. A gallery gives every image in the order the poster arranged them. A crosspost is followed to the original, where the media actually lives.
The post card
Before downloading, you see the post the way the bot shows it: the subreddit and author, the date, the score with its upvote percentage, the number of comments, the flair, an NSFW tag when the post has one, the title and the text. In the bot this card is the caption of the media, and Full text sends the rest when the caption had to be shortened.
Things to do with a saved video
- Find the song. Send the video to the bot and press Identify the music – see find a song from a video.
- Keep only a part. Reply with a range like
0:10-0:25and the cutter sends back that piece. - Other platforms. The same works for X (Twitter), TikTok and Pinterest.
